Word of the Week – Trigger
While there are many expressions in today’s slang, one seems to be used more and more often these days – “triggered”. Wondering what it means? Well, its origin is from the word trigger which in medicine is often used to describe a set of actions, thoughts or emotions that are re-experienced from past traumatic events in the present caused by something that reminds the person of that traumatic event. While triggers are usually used for past traumatic events, in today’s society we notice that a trigger doesn’t exclusively include traumatic events, but rather there are many kinds of triggers for many conditions.
The triggers that we are referring to are triggers for stress and anxiety – enemy duo n1 when it comes to our modern society. Have you noticed, that every night before you go to sleep somehow worries for the next day, possible and impossible scenarios haunt you, and you can’t get a good night sleep? Have you noticed that you are more and more increasingly under stress but, you can’t find a specific reason for it?
If the answer is yes, then the answer behind wondering what it could be the cause of stress and anxiety for you is a trigger. But, not a trigger by a past traumatic event, a trigger for a pattern. Most of the stress and anxiety issues today, are triggered by living too long in the comfort zone, by repeating the same day over and over again in an autopilot mode. They attack because you are deprived of magic. Because all your dreams can be a reality, yet you settle for pushing through another day, week, month, without being yourself. And that is no way to truly live life.
